What to do When a Bad Day Strikes

We all have those days, the days when nothing goes right, the days when it seems like the Universe is just conspiring against you. All you want to do is curl up in your bed with some tea, Nutella, and Gilmore Girls and avoid the catastrophes you know are waiting to happen.

I am right in the middle of it. I've had two successive days like this, and I'm really hoping to end that now. It all started yesterday, when I was running late to class and almost missed my bus. I left my apartment thinking it wasn't going to rain, and when I got to my bus stop it was basically pouring. Then in my haste to get to class, I wasn't paying attention and I slipped on the wet concrete and face-planted ate shit took a tumble right in the middle of the street. I twisted my ankle, ripped my favorite pair of jeans, skinned my knee, bruised the entire right side of my body (as well as my ego), and cracked my iPhone screen (cracked is putting it lightly). The French part of my brain essentially shut off, so I couldn't even properly thank the nice lady who ran up to me to make sure I was okay. I spent the next 20 minutes sobbing into my now empty cup of coffee while attempting to pull gravel out of my kneecap. I did, however, visit Memoranda which helped me feel better tremendously.

So this morning, I was determined to have a better day! I got up early, to give myself plenty of time to get to the University and study before my literature exam, and maybe enjoy a café au lait that I don't spill all over myself. I was definitely feeling the bruises from yesterday, so I wore my favorite comfy pants (read: yoga pants), my favorite sweater, and my most comfy sneakers, elephant scarf, etc. I was feeling pretty good about myself, before I got on the wrong bus. By the time I realized my mistake, we were in the boonies of Caen. I walked 2 miles back to the centre-ville of Caen to catch the tram to take me to the University. Thank goodness I had planned to arrive early... I was only 15 minutes late to class.

It's really easy to feel dejected, sad, and angry on days like these. As I was walking back to catch the tram, I just wanted to scream in the general direction of the bus for being the wrong one. When I was limping to class, I was kicking myself for not being more careful. It's easy to go that dark, negative place.

But that's not the only way to deal with a bad day.

You have a choice about how to deal with bad days, and maybe even make them good! Here are my favorite ways to fix a bad day:

1. Do something nice for yourself.
Go get your favorite drink at Starbucks, or have a cup of your favorite tea (at Memoranda), or make a batch of cupcakes. When you feel down on yourself, the best way to counteract that is to be nice to yourself. So do that - do something to take care of yourself.

2. Do a relaxing activity.

Bad days are stressful, so it's important to try and relax. Knit, crochet, watch a movie, read a book, whatever you need to do to de-stress, do it. Spend 15 minutes just letting yourself unwind and relax a bit. I know I love to paint my nails, and that always helps me relax, so I'm currently sporting a nice, bright blue shade.

3. Ask for help.

We all know what it feels like to have a bad day... and so we all know how great it feels when you get some encouragement from someone. Call your best friend, your boyfriend or girlfriend, or even your mom. Sometimes all you need to feel better is a hug and for someone to say, "it's ok" or to just let you talk it out. I called my dad yesterday, and it was so nice to hear him reassure me. Reach out! There's always someone who can give you a little bit of love when you're down.

4. Remember: It's just a bad day.

A bad day is just that: a day. It's temporary, and in less than 24 hours it will be over. Don't let your bad day make you feel like it's a bad life.

5. If all else fails, puppies prevail.

Step one: find a puppy.
Step two: snuggle with puppy.
Step three: feel the love.
