Things I Love Thursday!

Thursday, August 7, 2014

One of my favorite daily rituals that I do is checking all of my favorite blogs and reading them. Last week, I was reading All Shook Up, and her post called Things I Love Thursday. She posted a video of a Ted Talk, or more specifically, Gala Darling, and her talk at TEDxCMU. It's about 15 minutes long, but worth every single minute.

I have struggled with self-love and self-acceptance for much of my young adulthood, especially after I tore my ACL in 10th grade, couldn't run for six months and gained about 25 pounds, at the same time that I was dealing with an unsupportive coach and some serious family issues. I had been a competitive athlete, playing year round basketball. Almost overnight, my body had changed and I couldn't do a lot of the things I was used to doing. I turned to food as a way to try and fill a void that had appeared in my life. I don't think I've filled it yet.

The idea of radical self love is terrifying to me. I don't think I can just automatically say, I Love Myself and Everything I Am and Everything I Do! There are moments and days when I really feel the self-loathing, hatred, and pain that I've been carrying around for a while, and when I really feel depressed and anxious and scared. Most days, I just want to curl up in my bed and sleep. I actively have to think about loving myself, accepting myself, and staying true to myself. It's a process, and it's hard, but I am completely committed to that process and journey. As part of that journey, I want to share the positive things I have in my life right now, the things I love, and the things that make me happy.
